Florida citrus drop

Crop estimates for the Florida orange crop were trimmed to 166 million boxes last week.

The USDA had pegged the orange crop at 168m boxes, but more fruit is smaller than expected and is falling from trees.

Forecasts for Florida grapefruit dropped 500,000 boxes, to 24.5m boxes.

Michael Sparks, executive vice president and ceo of Florida Citrus Mutual, in Lakeland, told the US press: "Despite the slight decrease this is still a good sized crop for the Florida citrus industry. We are rebuilding juice inventories and growers are still getting solid prices for their fruit."
