Florette UK issued the following statement:

“It is with deep regret that Florette UK announces the death of managing director Gerald Lacey, after a short illness, bravely borne.

“Gerald was widely known and respected throughout the industry, and was held in deep affection by all at the company which he served so well.

“Gerald was instrumental in the commissioning and start-up of Florette’s UK factory at Fradley in 1998, becoming managing director in 1999. A background in supplying to the construction industry provided his expertise in managing the rigorous logistics necessary at Florette, the top selling prepared salad supplier.

“He was especially concerned with all aspects of Florette's fast-growing and multi-culture workforce, particularly with staff relations and welfare, and with providing a convivial and creative atmosphere at Florette, in social as well as work activities.

“Gerald was especially proud of introducing the UK's first enforceable Green Transport Policy at Florette, with countrywide deliveries made outside rush hours and with staff being transported to and from the factory by Florette company buses to reduce dependence on cars.

“Florette has just won an important national award for its Green Transport Policy, recently announced by Staffordshire County Council.

“Another source of pride for Gerald was Florette's record as an employer in the Region. Beginning with a staff of 30 at the factory's inception in 1999 Florette has just completed a major new factory extension and now employ a workforce of over 300. Each employee was personally known to him.

“Gerald worked tirelessly with Local Authority Organisations, including Advantage West-Midlands to assist Florette's rapid and successful growth to become the UK's top-selling salad brand. The company consistently achieved top industrial quality control awards, and has collected many additional accolades under his stewardship.

“In July, Gerald organised a 5th Anniversary Birthday Party for Florette staff and families in the factory grounds at Fradley. A concert concluded a day of festivities, which celebrated the company's multi-culture heritage with Asian and Western music expertly performed by Florette staff.

“Survived by wife Lynne, two sons, a daughter and two granddaughters, Gerald was a devoted family man as well as a dedicated managing director.”
