Flandria is largest quality mark for fresh vegetables in Europe

Now that the final figures for 2003 are available, things are looking good for Flandria. Last year 474,394 tonnes of fresh vegetables were approved for sale under the Flandria quality mark, making it by far the largest in Europe as regards fresh vegetables.

Fresh vegetables are defined here as vegetables that have not undergone any processing. Quality marks are understood to mean quality labels that originate with growers or growers' associations, that offer guarantees in terms of production conditions, quality and food safety, and that are also subject to internal and external checks.

Trademarks are not included in this definition.

The main Flandria products in 2003 were butterhead lettuce (131,000t), vine tomatoes (95,500t), loose tomatoes (94,500t), cucumbers (55,000t), witloof chicory (Belgian endive) (37,000t) and leeks (30,000t). In terms of total fresh vegetable production in Belgium, Flandria accounts for 80 to 90 per cent of vegetables grown under glass and 50 per cent of field produce.
