The first Isle of Wight tomatoes of the year were picked and packed by Wight Salads main road farm at Arreton on January 29.

The 6kg of cherry toms were bought by Manor House Farm of Newport for £16.20 and sold on to two retailers in the west of the county, Avenue Road and Orchard Bros of Freshwater.

'The tomatoes were beautiful,' said Manor House Farm's Nick Yates. 'We have been working with a lot of Israeli product, which is a little tart and the IoW fruit was notable for its good, high sugar levels.'
