First SA avos hit UK shores

Westfalia Marketing has received the first consignment of South African avocados for the UK market.

By careful management of the early growing regions, the first premium-quality Fuerte arrived in the UK on March 13, 2008.

Fruit is clean and bright and has been well received, according to Westfalia, and arrivals will slowly increase over the coming weeks as the South African mango season gradually comes to an end.

Westfalia is looking forward to a healthy season with good supply, excellent quality and a growing market. The firm foresees increased availability of greenskins, with a similar size spread to that of 2007. “We expect to have the same excellent quality throughout the season from the first consignment into the country, as well as the final order of the season,” said Ryan Larkan, Westfalia UK Technical Manager.

“Outside and during the South African season, Westfalia sources from supply partners throughout the world, supplying the UK market 12 months a year. This enables us to supply the major supermarket programmes, food service sectors and wholesale customers consistently.”
