The first shipments of Israel’s new season melon crop are now hitting UK shores, according to Amos Orr, general manager of Agrexco UK.

“It’s early days, and for the first wave sizing is smaller, but with the second flush we are looking for larger sizes. However, more importantly, brix levels are high, making for fruit with good eating quality,” he said.

“We will mainly be dealing with Israeli varieties for spring going under the name 6003 and 6004, and we expect to have a reasonable season. At the same time we will also be trying out new varieties. The strong market in Israel will continue until Easter -- demand there is high but we know that we shall later see a significant increase in supply.”

Agrexco is also seafreighting organic Galia to the UK, with all supplies at this stage destined for the multiples. “This is an important area for us, one that we have worked hard on and one that we would like to succeed with,” said Orr. “From mid-April we will bring in Charentais from Morocco. Our grower there works solely for us, and although supplies have been sent to France in previous seasons, this is the first year they will be sent to the UK.”
