Despite a cold spring holding crops back, UK grower and packer Oakley Farms delivered its first English courgettes of the season to TA Hilliard at Spitalfields this week.

Steve Whitworth, Oakley Farms sales manager presented the first box of the new-season crop to Hilliard’s Jim Marshall on Tuesday.

Whitworth told FPJ he is delighted with the condition of the early courgettes, but the cooler spell of weather in May means full availability is not expected for at least another 10 days. The crop should then run until late September, he said.

Oakley Farms, based in Outwell, Cambridgeshire is growing more than 200 acres of courgettes for the 2006 campaign, with product destined for multiples, wholesalers, caterers and processors. The company is BRC, Natures Choice and Assured Produce accredited
