First Cornish new potatoes lifted

The first Cornish new potatoes have been lifted and will be marketed under the Growfair - Pride of Cornwall brand.

The potatoes, grown by Andrew Thomas of Goldsithney and marketed by Growfair, were lifted last Thursday.

The season is running approximately two weeks late due to this year’s record cold winter and the main harvesting should start towards the end of April.

Available in a 6.36kg box to start with, Growfair then moves into a 12.5kg and then finally a 25kg sack as the season progresses.

Growfair - Pride of Cornwall, backed by Bristol Fruit Sales, markets product for 10 small potato growers in and around the Penzance area and this year Growfair - Pride of Wales will be stocking Pembrokeshire new potatoes for the first time.

Bristol Fruit Sales (Bodmin) sales manager Colin Putt said: “Our customers have been chasing us for weeks for Cornish new potatoes at last they have started and we can begin to satisfy demand.”

Bristol Fruit Sales Ltd supplies Growfair Cornish new potatoes through Total Produce wholesale market traders and to other wholesalers nationally.
