First Bursa figs shipped

Israeli exporter Agrexco is in confident mood ahead of the fig season, with the first fruit of the Bursa variety on its way to the UK this week.

The figs, grown in the Lower Galilee, overlooking the Sea of Galilee, are set to reach a respectable 30 tonnes for export this season, the same level as last year.

The Bursa variety, which originates in Turkey, is entirely dependent on wasps in its pollination and fertilisation process, a fact that eliminates usage of pesticides in order not to harm the wasps. The result is a potentially cleaner, residue-free fruit, healthier and “greener".

Bezalel Madmon, product manager at Agrexco, said that the UK and Europe will be the destination for the product.

The figs will be sold in 1kg cartons, as well as in punnets containing four figs.
