British Tenderstem arrives in numbers

The first batch of this year’s British Tenderstem crop has hit the shops following the recent warm weather.

Retailers across the country have started stocking the British-grown broccoli with its organic crop now ready for harvest.

Currently 37 tonnes of British Tenderstem are picked per week, with volumes increasing week-on-week, according to fresh produce marketing firm Coregeo.

Sussex-based Barfoots grower Nathan Delicott said: “We’re experiencing a great early start to the British Tenderstem season, and in fact a number of retailers are anticipating stocking 100% British crop in just a few weeks’ time.”

Independent nutritionist, Dr Carrie Ruxton urges people to go out and buy Tenderstem, praising its health benefits. She said: “Tenderstem broccoli is nutritionally rich and the most tender form of broccoli, meaning that cooking and preparation can be minimal and nutrients can be preserved.”

Delicott adds: “The quality we are harvesting at the moment is extremely good, and the crop is recovering some of the time lost during the bad weather. Thanks to the current warm period, we can be confident of a good continuity of supply throughout June.”

British Tenderstem will be available until November, and can be found in most major retailers.
