A new government funded program is launching a supply chain initiative to help businesses improve their environmental performance and save money.

Envirowise is inviting larger food and drink companies to join the initiative and work with its suppliers to reduce waste and identify resource efficiencies through water, raw materials, packaging and energy use.

The four-stage programme, which will take around six months to complete, comprises an introductory workshop, on-site waste reviews, targeted training workshops and impact assessment for all participating businesses.

David Bellamy, food safety and environment manager for the Food and Drink Federation said: “This is an excellent opportunity for food and drink businesses to work together towards long-term sustainability as well as reaping commercial rewards.”

Envirowise said that working with companies under similar schemes last year was extremely successful, with wholesaler Brakes Bros saving £620,000 and the Co-operative Group saved £420,000.

Dr Martin Gibson, Envirowise programme director said: “Both lead companies and suppliers can achieve significant cost savings and improved customer relationships from sharing best practice and working together to reduce their environmental impact.

“The programme will be run by specialists who understand the industry and issues affecting it. Our experience has shown reducing waste costs can save one per cent of turnover by putting into place simple, low cost measures.”
