Haverfordwest, in west Wales, Orton in Cumbria, north-west England and Andover in southern England, form the trio of markets to be ratified under new National Association of Farmers Markets (NAFM) standards.

Orton will be the first to receive the certificate of excellence when it is officially presented with the accolade on June 8.

NAFM co-ordinator James Pavitt was delighted the new scheme was up and running, saying it was vital for the chain of markets.

He said: 'Farmers markets have become extremely popular over the past five years, however, the term farmers market is not legally recognised and a large number of markets have expressed concern that it can be misused.' Some 40 markets have applied for certification in light of the recent awards.
