Rebellious farmers have launched a series of strikes over the prices supermarkets offer for their produce. Members of pressure group Farmers for Action withheld supplies of vegetables, milk, meat this week, with more protests threatened before Christmas. A spokesman for the pressure group said the action will put pressure on retailers to make sure primary producers "get a substantial return for their product".

He added: "Alongside this action all food producers in the UK, be it livestock, vegetables, whatever, are also being asked to withhold their produce from the market place for the three days.

"We hope this will draw attention to the benefits of home grown, UK product and the health dangers to both man and beast, of imported supplies."

He said that in addition to the livelihoods of his members, the health of consumers was being put at risk as a result of major retailers who sourced cheap food from across the world. He warned more strikes would follow in the run-up to Christmas.
