More than half of UK households are choosing to buy direct from the farm, according to the latest research from the National Farmers’ Retail and Markets’ Association (FARMA).

Farm shops and farmers’ markets are seeing their highest number of customers since FARMA began its annual tracking survey in 2004. Farm shops and markets remain the most popular places to buy local food and support those who made it.

The survey, conducted through YouGov, gathered information from over 2,000 households across Great Britain.

In addition, pick-your-own farms are showing their first increase in customer numbers after a four year period of decline. As indicated in the US that there is potential for a revival as consumers seek quality coupled with value for money.

Gareth Jones, FARMA managing agent, said: “People are becoming more aware of the benefits of local foods direct from the producer, particularly in this economic downturn. Their custom supports local businesses.”
