Churncote Farm Shop in Shropshire plans to expand its organic orchard, following success in its first eight months of trading.

The shop opened in July 2003 with help of funding from Defra’s Rural Enterprise Scheme. David and Sue Clarke converted a cowshed on their farm into a shop, where they sell the farm’s own seasonal vegetables, soft fruit and fresh flowers.

The next step is to create an organic orchard, the produce of which will be sold through the shop. The Clarke family began by planting 200 apple, pear and plum trees in their new orchard at the beginning of January.”

David Clarke identified several factors, which have contributed to the success of the business. He said: “I think we have benefited from being one of the few farm shops in the area and local people like to buy local produce. Our location on a main road is ideal and demand is growing, both within Shropshire and further afield.”
