Family food bills halved in last 50 years

Household expenditure on food has halved in the last 50 years, the National Office of Statistics has revealed.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks accounted for a third of the weekly spend in 1957, and this dropped to 15 per cent by 2007.

The survey of nearly 7,000 UK households reflects how commercial farming and supermarkets have slashed the price of food.

Mortgage payments and rent has overtaken groceries as the single biggest srain on family budgets.

The results were published to mark 50 years of the annual Family Expenditure Survey.
