Fairtrade bananas account for 62 per cent of all fairtrade sales

Fairtrade products could become the "new organics" with bananas leading the fairtrade drive accounting for 62 per cent of sales, according to a report from Leatherhead Food International.

The report, entitled Fairtrade Foods - Market Prospects for the Ethical Option, says that the market could hold enormous potential for expansion.

Organic sales have risen from around $0.4 billion in the late 1980's to an estimated $25bn this year. Sales of fairtrade produce are currently valued at approximately €300-400 million a year and confidence for the future of the market is high with strong growth is expected to continue.

Leatherhead forecasts that the market for certified fairtrade foods will show volume and value growth of 20-25 per cent over the next four or five years. It is expected to reach levels of around 150,000 tonnes worth about $1bn by 2007.
