The Bramley Campaign showed it was at the top of the league when the Everton FC Extra Time Study Centre ran a series of cookery workshops for three days during Bramley Apple Week (6-13 February).
The Bramley apple workshops introduced children, together with some of their parents to cooking with Bramley.
Over the three days. around 200 children, parents and teachers made Bramley apple pancakes in an interactive environment and with expert guidance from the Everton FC chef. Separate sessions were organised to highlight healthy eating and the importance of 5 A DAY. Additionally, all the children participated in competitions downloaded from the Bramley website.
The Extra Time Study Centre ran the initiative as a joint venture with The Department of Science & Education and the local council - it formed part of a continuous programme which aims to teach children literacy and IT skills through a range of different curricular activities.
All the children who participated were presented with certificates, while prizes of tickets to premier division matches were given to the winners of the competition.
Adrian Barlow, chief executive of English Apples & Pears, said: "This initiative was superb as it communicated directly with children, teaching them basic cooking skills and demonstrating how easy it is to prepare tasty, nutritious food. Not only are Bramley apples a wonderfully versatile ingredient with a unique flavour which can transform a range of sweet and savoury dishes, but they are also really good for you, and count towards your 5 A DAY.”
He said the Bramley Campaign would be repeating the exercise in 2007.
