Exotics line up for Chile

Pomegranates and loquats could be the next big hope for Chilean fruit exports, according to luminaries from the sector.

As producers and exporters prepare for the Fruittrade event in Santiago next week, Decofrut president Manuel José Alcaíno told Chilean magazine Revista del Campo that pomegranates show great potential.

According to Alcaíno, the growing popularity of pomegranates in export markets because of their health benefits is creating demand for fresh and processed product. And although Chile only has an annual export figure of 150 tonnes, the fact that pomegranate production thrives on very little water bodes well for the South American exporter.

Fedefruta president Rodrigo Echeverría told the same publication that loquats show excellent potential too because of their low water use.
