Many a summer has been spent picking your own strawberries - but a greenhouse in Mawdesley, Lancashire, wants visitors to pick something altogether more exotic.

The Greenhouse Sensations company is offering visitors a selection of bananas, lemon grass, ginger and chillies, all grown in the greenhouse without soil.

Visitors have already picked hundreds of chillies and dozens of lemongrass, and the team are awaiting an up-coming harvest of ginger, papaya fruit, bananas and a pineapple, which will happen at some point in September.

Emma Lowther-Wright, from Greenhouse Sensation, said: “Visitors are generally most excited by the bananas but we also get a lot of repeat visits from fans of spicy food who pop in for some chillies.”

The fruit has been grown using special ‘Hydro Systems’ equipment, which works by sitting the plants in a tray or pot, and automatically feeding them water nutrients from a reservoir - then whatever the plants don’t need is then filtered back into the reservoir.
