Vitacress salad

Vitacress Salads is celebrating a return to profits thanks to an 'excellent summer'.

The watercress and baby leaf salad giant's accounts, posted to Companies House, show that it has bounced back from a loss of £575,000 in the previous financial year to a £2m pre-tax profit for the year ending 31 December 2013.

The firm's turnover, meanwhile, was up from £50.7 million in 2012, to £54.4m last year.

Keith Fairbrass, Vitacress Salads' group finance director, said: 'The company had another challenging year in 2013. The year began with exceptionally cold and wintry weather which delayed the start to the UK season. However, this was followed by an excellent summer. The business continued to deliver strong innovation to our customers, especially in salad bowls, and overall there was significant improvement in both sales and profit compared to 2012.'

The company's directors have identified the key risks to Vitacress Salads as the continued weakness of sterling against the Euro; continued pressure from the market to reduce prices; poor spring and summer weather reducing demand and depressing supply; and weakness in demand for bagged salads in the UK due to the general economic climate, or other external factors, such as food scares.
