English Village Salads is an established tomato supplier

English Village Salads (EVS) scored a fresh produce hat-trick with the launch of locally grown British round tomatoes into selected Asda stores last week.

After the recent supply of the first British cucumbers and Little Gem into the UK’s second largest retailer, EVS is optimistic about sales of the Yorkshire-grown salad tomatoes, which are sold in six-packs.

Mark Thompson, EVS’ Selby-based trading manager, said: “Many consumers are looking for ways to cut their food bills and we are seeing many trading back into round tomatoes from the more premium vine varieties, so we’re delighted to be able to offer our customers delicious round tomatoes, grown locally in Yorkshire."

Last year EVS reduced the packaging on this tomato by 75 per cent when it invested in the innovative Ulma Atlanta E flow wrapper. This eliminated the need to use the plastic tray traditionally used in this product.

Sean Gray, fresh produce manager at Asda’s Kingswood store, said: “This product ticks a lot of boxes for our customers. Not only is it locally grown but it has less packaging and a good everyday low price."

Asda is to mark the start of British Tomato week with an event hosted by EVS and the British Tomato Growers’ Association on May 18 at its head office.
