Greater volume of the trio leaf will be available next year

A trio leaf salad that is sold still attached to its roots has been rolled out across 100 Asda stores, following its introduction by English Village Salads (EVS) in the spring.

Three different types of leaf - lollo rosso, lollo biondo and red oak - are grown hydroponically in a single peat block, and sold in individual packs.

UK growers are being sought to produce the line, which to date has been grown in the Netherlands, in time for next summer.

Vanessa Elmer, business development manager at EVS, told freshinfo: “This has been our biggest win this year. We have developed the trio leaf with growers in the Netherlands. It has a longer shelf life because the leaf is still attached to its roots. It can be stood in water on the window sill, and the leaves can be cut off when needed. There has been an awful lot of interest and we are planning to launch it in other major retailers.”

EVS aims to extend the glasshouse space used to grow the trio leaf so there will be higher volumes available next year.

The product retails at £1.29, and is now on offer for £1.
