The British Potato Trade Association (BPTA) is hosting the 2010 Europatat Annual Congress in the UK for the first time.

The event will take place in Edinburgh on May 27-29 and presents the UK potato industry with an opportunity to promote the industry to the rest of Europe.

It will also allow the BPTA to showcase the activities of Europatat to the industry and national authorities.

Colin Herron of McCain Potatoes, who is also the current president of the BPTA, said: “The decision to hold the event in Edinburgh was an easy one given its innovative and inspirational setting. We have secured some excellent venues for the two-day congress in the historic old town of Scotland’s capital.

“The congress presents an outstanding opportunity for the British seed and ware potato trade, including the packing industry, to demonstrate to the world the important benefits it derives from being part of a fully integrated industry.

“In addition, the congress will provide an ideal platform for a debate on the future direction of the European industry in the face of proposed changes to trading and plant health legislation. I look forward to welcoming potato industry friends from across Europe as well as the UK-based companies to what will be an informative and memorable congress.”

The outcome of the Europatat 2010 project will be presented for approval in Edinburgh by Europatat president Kees van Arendonk.
