High street retailers are celebrating their biggest sales boost for six months, in June, thanks to the euphoria created by the Euro 2004 football tournament.

Retail sales jumped by 1.1 per cent in the month, compared with 0.7% in May, official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

The data has been met by analysts’ predictions of an interest rate rise by the Bank of England next month.

The figure for the month brought the year-on-year gain in High Street sales to 7.2 per cent, the ONS said.

UK sales have now avoided a decline for 13 months - the longest period of growth since comparable records began in 1986.
