The EU-Israel controversy over specifying the origin of goods, fresh produce included, finally looks set for resolution, based on new proposals by Israel's minister of industry and trade Ehud Olmert. The new proposal would call for products originating from the settlements in the Gaza region and the West Bank and exported to EU member countries to have that origin specified in customs documents. A report in Israeli national daily Maariv noted that the new proposition was received favourably by EU officials, claiming that this arrangement could be the basis for solving the years-long controversy. EU officials added that minister Olmert should submit his new plan in detail, which will then entail bilateral meetings "to finalise the plan," according to the report.
