An independent report for the European Commission says the competitiveness of the EU food sector will decline against competing regions, unless governments and industry acts.
The report, which was undertaken by three independent research organisations, suggests food legislation could be improved by “codification, clarification and simplification”.
Differences among member states on pesticide usage are cited as an example of
the unsatisfactory regulatory environment, while the report also claims that the disclosure of new legislation is not structured and there is a continuous flow of up-dates and new regulations.
These put SMEs at a disadvantage compared with large companies who can dedicate staff to monitoring new measures.
According to Food & Drink Matters, the report says the food industry is aware of the need for a strong legal framework which creates a “level playing field” for all companies and promotes a “positive reputation” for EU products outside the Union, but urges a simpler and more structured regime.
