Baltimore Innovations has announced its appointment as EU distributors for the IAF Always Fresh Anti-Microbial/Anti-spoilage system. This is a new, patented system that combines the benefits of removing ethylene gas and micro-organisms to reduce product spoilage and increase cost-efficiency.

'Most fresh produce companies try to control the environment inside their facility or cold storage areas with temperature, humidity or by separation,' said a statement. 'These measures are not nearly enough. Even if your product turnover is short, you are constantly contaminating your facilities air with ethylene gas, and micro-organisms.' Research has shown that low levels of ethylene gas (0.5ppm) can attack the immune system of many varieties of flowers, fruit and vegetables rendering them more susceptible to fungal decay, premature ripening and discoloration, thus decreasing their shelf life.

IAF Always Fresh(r) utilises a patented reaction chamber to remove 50 per cent of ethylene gas in one pass through the system and the remainder within 90 minutes. It therefore claims to be faster than ethylene scrubbers on the market that can take 2-3 days to reach a maximum efficiency of just 70 per cent. In addition, tests performed by Iowa State University showed that the system is outstanding in killing all micro-organisms (including fungi and moulds) to further reduce spoilage/shrinkage.

'A low cost self-contained unit priced under £2,000, the system will eliminate premature ripening and unsightly discoloration and reduce spoilage by up to 30 per cent, allowing a typical payback after just four months,' said the company.
