For the first time, Ethiopia has begun exporting organic bananas, with 40 tonnes shipped to Saudi Arabia.
An agreement has been made to export 200t of organic bananas to Jidda market on a weekly basis.
The Ethiopian Horticulture Development Agency (EHDA) said it has imported two high-yield, improved varieties from South Africa called Grand Name and William that meet the international market standard of organic bananas.
The initiative aims to save an estimated 234 tonnes of plastic packaging per year
