A new supermarket venture to draw ethical shoppers away from the large retailers using an army of free staff has begun.

The People’s Supermarket aims to engage volunteers in a co-operative model and allow them to gain cheap prices in return for labour.

The supermarket, which opened in central London this month, is the brainchild of Arthur Potts Dawson - a restaurateur who hopes to offer an alternative to the mainstream supermarkets.

Volunteers will provide the workforce for the outlet in return for cheaper priced goods. The public can also shop at the store, but must pay full price for their shopping.

Membership to The People’s Supermarket costs £25 and members can vote on foods stocked and make decisions on how its run as a part owner of the fledgling company.

The store, which was a Tesco store in a previous incarnation, is based upon the Park Slope co-operative shop in Brooklyn, New York.
