Eosta ceo Volkert Engelsman, far left, receives the certification from the TÜV Nord and Soil & More team

Dutch organic specialist Eosta has become the first company in Europe to offer TüV-Nord certified CO2-neutral products, in partnership with organic compost firm Soil & More.

Selected organic certified apples, oranges, pears and vine tomatoes from Argentina, Egypt and the Netherlands respectively underwent a full life cycle carbon assessment throughout 2007, across all greenhouse gas emissions related to production, shipping, processing and distribution.

Tobias Bandel carried out the study on behalf of Nature & More, an independent foundation that evaluates quality aspects of organic food, at the request of Eosta.

Volkert Engelsman, ceo of Eosta, told freshinfo: “The reaction to this project has been largely positive, and the products will be available throughout Europe. I believe the first organic climate-neutral products will be available in the UK in the next few months, assuming the UK retailers will walk their talk. We will be rolling out the scheme to other Nature & More licensees.”

Emissions are offset with carbon credits obtained from Soil & More compost produced by organic growers. The returns of the carbon credits are considered an extra income for a service directly contributing to the development of climate-friendly agriculture.

Accreditation organisation TüV-Nord verified the accuracy of the assessment, with the compensations based on verified emission reductions (VER) obtained from Soil & More composting practices.
