Enza cancels Jazz contracts

Enza is cancelling contracts for several growers in the Nelson area who will lose the right to grow more Jazz. The outcome is a gap of some two-years in their production schedule.

Enza chief executive Kevin Bell confirmed to NZ media that the company is canceling contracts to supply Jazz trees to growers.

Up to 80,000 trees had been ordered through the contracts, mostly by growers in Nelson and Hawke’s Bay. Some were due to be planted this year while others were to be planted in 18 months.

But Enza notified some growers before Christmas that it would be canceling contracts. “Enza has a key strategy to take 65 per cent control of the national crop and establish an oligopoly position with Enza as the leader of that,” Bell was reported.

He said the move will align the orchards growing Jazz and allow the trees to be allocated to loyal growers, he said.

“We will supply growers who put further investments in their business for the long term,” he added.
