Dartford-based distribution firm Fresh Service was at Fruit Logistica to act as a host for its customers, looking after their luggage, charging mobile phones for them and setting up a meeting room on its stand at their disposal.

The company, which does non-multiple distribution for wholesalers, foodservice firms and packers, among others, is conveniently located between the Port of Tilbury, the Channel Tunnel and London. “We are the only firm providing a supermarket service to the non-supermarket sector,” said managing director Brian Porter. “We provide logistical support to bluechip companies, which is what we are doing here in Berlin.”

The firm has changed all its vehicles this year to the top spec available, which means additive is injected when the emission comes out of the engine, dissolving CO2 output. “In house, we are looking at our emissions all the time and measuring efficiencies. We are bringing in controls to inspect the mileage of vehicles, and talking to our competitors to see if together we can become more efficient and profitable,” said Porter.

London’s Low Emission Zone, a scheme designed to keep harmful emissions in the centre of the city to a minimum, has been welcomed by Fresh Service. “It’s a good thing that the government is cleaning up London. We don’t want everyone to point their finger at the freight industry - we have got to clean up our act,” added Porter.
