Sainsbury’s has launched English-grown kiwiberries in its stores, with the bite-size fruit exclusive and a first for any retailer in the UK.

Now grown in Hertfordshire, extensive trials have been carried out to grow the kiwiberry in Britain, with the fruit traditionally found in Italy and Holland and as far afield as South America and New Zealand.

No larger than a grape, kiwiberries are a sweeter alternative to kiwifruit while being more convenient to eat.

"We're always looking at new ways to grow more fruit on home soil which is a good thing for British farmers as well as our customers," said Finbar Cartlidge, tropical fruit buyer at Sainsbury's. "We anticipate this local launch of British kiwiberries to come as a great addition of fresh quality produce available in store.

"We'd encourage customers to take advantage of this exclusive offer while they're available as stocks are limited," Cartlidge added. "We hope to work closely with the grower to produce a larger crop in the future."

British kiwiberries are now available in ten select stores in Hereford and the south west of England, with the 125g packs priced at £2.75.
