English cues debut in Broadstairs

Thanet Earth has produced what it claims to be the first English cucumbers of the season. A&A Growers, which owns and operates the cucumber glasshouse at Thanet Earth in Kent, picked its first cues on Monday afternoon. The produce will be on sale exclusively in some Tesco stores served by the retailer’s Snodland depot for the next two weeks.

Plants were moved to the greenhouse just before Christmas last year. Volumes are expected to be low for the next few weeks but will build gradually to reach of some 700,000 cucumbers a week during the summer peak.

Tesco Extra in Broadstairs held a cucumber sandwich tea party with growers Arjan de Gier and Addy Breugem from A&A as well as Thanet Earth representatives and the mayor of Broadstairs Bill Peppiatt to welcome the start of the season.
