Sainsbury's Kent-grown cranberries began on sale at half price

Sainsbury’s has become the first supermarket to sell English-grown cranberries in its stores.

Grown in Kent, the punnets will be available in the county’s Bybrook and Rochester stores priced at £2 for 300g.

The supermarket began working with Kent grower John Myatt last year. Unlike in the US, where the field is flooded with water to collect the berries, the cranberries are safely handpicked.

Peter Czarnobaj, product technologist of Soft Fruit at Sainsbury’s, said: “Cranberries are often associated with Christmas and the winter months so we’re proud to be the first to be growing them on home soil.

"We hope customers take advantage of this exclusive offer while the cranberries are in season as they’re a great addition to any winter dish or Sunday roast.”

Following this first British harvest, Sainsbury’s is now working with its growers to expand the crop in time for the next festive season.
