EMR shares apple days with the public

East Malling Research (EMR) will be opening its doors to the public for the first time in five years for their ‘Apple Days’ on September 29 and 30.

As well as farm tours and seminars, fruit enthusiasts will have the chance to view up to 600 varieties from the National Fruit Collection, along with a display on how and why EMR is genetically fingerprinting the collection. Experts from the centre will also be on hand to give tips on fruit pest and disease management, grafting and pruning, and demonstrate some of EMR’s research in organic fruit production.

Seminar topics will include ‘tales from the orchard’, fruit breeding, natural methods of pest control, apple storage and fruit for health.

For kids, there will be a range of activities including interactive science displays, animals from Miller’s Ark children’s farm, face painting and Gary the musical clown, whilst parents can enjoy a cider bar, a food, drink and plant market, arts and crafts stalls, jazz, and Morris dancing.
