East Malling Research (EMR) has restructured to separate its commercial and scientific activity.

EMR is recognised as a centre of excellence for fruit research but it also runs a farm, conference centre, property lettings and a fine foods business. Under the reorganisation, these non-scientific, commercial activities are being run by East Malling Ltd. This company and EMR have both become subsidiaries of a newly established incorporated charity limited by guarantee - East Malling Trust for Horticultural Research.

Commercial activities that would previously have come under EMR are the responsibility of Adrian Padfield, ceo of the new trust. He is also heading up East Malling Ltd which manages East Malling Conference Centre, East Malling Farm and Malling Fine Foods as well as property lettings.

Dr Mike Solomon, remains ceo of EMR and continues to head up all scientific activity.
