Ee by Galia at Asda

International produce has successfully harvested its first locally produced glasshouse production Galia melons, aimed at supplying Asda for Yorkshire Day on August 1.

The fruit, pictured, will be available for around three to four weeks, in four Yorkshire stores: Harrogate, Wakefield, York and Barnsley.

The Galia strain Alpes, supplied by Dutch seed specialist Rijk Zwaan, was selected for its high sugar levels.

The fruit has been grown under glass at Stockbridge Technology Centre, with three different production methods being trialled, namely rockwool and upright soil production, alongside the more traditional Spanish style of flat grown.

Total production this year will be approximately 4,500 fruit. The planned retail on the melons is £1 a piece.
