Edinburgh’s wholesale fruit market is moving across the Scottish capital to a new warehouse built by Fyffes.
The move comes after plans were drawn up to demolish the former site at Chesser Avenue to make way for a £65 million development of nearly 500 new homes.
Fyffes owns the market and has bought a nine-acre site at Sighthill where a 30,000sqft warehouse is to be built to house the market.
It is reportedly considering plans for the rest of the land on the new site.
The scheme for the former site at Chesser Avenue also includes the building of 70 low-cost flats and 10 detached houses.
Fyffes bought the site of the old Asda building next to the existing market last year, as well as air conditioning factory Specific Heat, to make a 9.4-acre prime development site for housing.
The old site is due to be put on the market by the end of the month.
Robert Knox, group property director at Fyffes, said: “The acquisition of this site gives us an excellent opportunity to build and expand our existing property portfolio and create additional value for the group through added value development.
“In addition, it allows us to work toward relocating the existing fruit market in order to provide vacant possession on the Chesser site.”
He said planning for the site was set to be passed by Edinburgh City Council pending agreement.
