Banana production in Ecuador has fallen severely as a result of cold weather in the South American country.

Ecuadorian growers claim production has declined by 30 to 40 per cent in the last two months, with fruit sizing also falling.

In El Oro in the south west, where banana production is centred, the temperature has been around 20°C at night, according to El Universo of Guayaquil.

Paúl González, president of the Agriculture Center of Machala, said the cool weather has caused a delay in the development of the fruit.
