Ecuador has said it is “extremely disappointed” with the EU decision not to sign an agreement on the banana import regime negotiated on the fringes of the WTO Doha talks in July.

The world’s largest exporter of bananas said last week that it will therefore push ahead with its complaint against the EU at a WTO disputes panel. Foreign minister María Isabel Salvador said: “Ecuador is once again urging the EU to sign up to the agreement and put an end to this problem.”

Ecuador is insisting the July deal was meant to be “a stand-alone agreement” and dependent on the success of the wider Doha talks.

When the EU failed to sign the banana deal agreed with Latin American exporters in July, Ecuador and the US pressed on with their litigation. Now the EU has said it will appeal the WTO ruling against its regime.
