Tesco has added organic pea shoots to its range of washed and ready-to-eat bagged salads.

The new product, a first to market, was launched at the beginning of October. It is available in a 50g bag and retails at £1.29 a pack.

Pea shoots can be eaten hot or cold, and are picked young for their delicate, sweet pea flavour. The vegetable is also highly nutritious, being an excellent source of vitamins A and C.

Emma Pettitt, Tesco organic salad buyer, said: “Our organic bagged salad range has enjoyed exceptionally strong growth over the last year, following the move to merchandising conventional and organic products together, with sales up by more than 40 per cent year on year.

“Organic pea shoots are a really exciting innovation for Tesco, as for the first time we are introducing a product into the organic salad range which is not simply a ‘me too’ of a conventionally produced line. We believe our shoppers will increasingly look to organic food for genuine novelty. This launch will help meet these needs and maintain growth in the category.”
