More than half of Brits place little importance on foods that affect their eyesight - increasing to nearly two thirds when it comes to 18-34 year olds, according to a healthy sight research study carried out by IPSOS Health.

The study revealed that awareness of a connection between food and eyesight is quite high, however it found that knowledge of what these foods might be and how they help vision is alarming low.

Overlooking foods rich in vital vitamins and antioxidants can lead to an increased risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts and a reduction in good vision.

Fresh fruits and vegetables such as carrots, oranges, mangos, blueberries and dark leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli are essential, while fresh fish, eggs, nuts and whole-grains should also be staple items in the diet.
