A “metric martyr” market trader stands accused of selling produce in pounds rather than kilos, after her appeal to have the case thrown out was denied.

Janet Devers will stand trial for selling dates at £1.90 a pound, instead of legal metric measurements.

The 63-year-old’s family has run the stall in Dalston, in London’s East End, for 60 years. Devers is also charged with selling sweetcorn, Chinese cabbage, pak choi and Scotch Bonnet chillies without clear reference to kilos or without a clear pricing system, according to a report in the Evening Standard.

Devers has been billed as the latest “metric martyr” to challenge EU regulations, that were introduced to outlaw the imperial system.
