Very early arrivals of green-skinned Israeli avocados made extremely good money on UK wholesale markets this week.
At Nottingham, 14s and 16s achieved levels of 1050-1080p a carton and in Bristol, the price was even higher for 16s.
Agrexco, a major exporter of the fruit to the UK, will not start to send fruit until the end of the month, when Ettinger will come on stream. The company’s general manager in the UK, Oded Yacovson, told freshinfo: “The peak will be in December. We are expecting an on-year this year, so volume should be up by about 20 per cent on last season.”
However, he reported strong demand in excess of the increased supply. Yacovson said: “Europe is now moving over to the small sizes traditionally preferred by the UK. There will be a lot of demand for the fruit.”
