Braeburn: unfairly accused

An investigation conducted by The Sun that accuses British retailers of failing to stock English Braeburn has come under fire from English Apples & Pears (EAP).

The tabloid newspaper visited eight different supermarket chains to assess availability of a range of British items, focusing on Braeburn as the apple it was searching for - despite it being too early in the season for home-grown supplies of the variety.

EAP chief executive Adrian Barlow told FPJ: “While on the one hand I absolutely applaud The Sun for trying to promote buying British, it is a real pity the investigation chose to focus on British Braeburn, which will not be available until mid-December and at the very earliest the end of November. The report failed to note that there are a host of other English varieties available in the shops, except for a mention of Cox at Lidl.”

However, the report did mention finding English Braeburn in store at Asda, although Barlow was sceptical. “British Braeburn is not fit to eat yet. In some ways it is very sad there is this lack of awareness of seasonality,” he said.

“When we spoke to The Sun about this they did acknowledge that they found a lot of British apples in all the stores - but this was not mentioned in the report.”
