Think Food and Farming has announced that over 4,500 enthusiastic farmers and providers of food and farming activities for children have signed up to the campaign.

Think Food and Farming is encouraging farmers to welcome children and young people onto their farms to show them where their food comes from and how it is produced.

Not only are farmer’s opening up their farm gates to school pupils and hosting educational visits, they have been busy developing unique projects based around cooking and growing since the Year of Food and Farming was launched in September 2007.

Think Food and Farming, led by Farming and Countryside Education (FACE), works with partner organisations to promote cooking, growing and farm visit opportunities to schools.

Highfield Farm in Topsham has developed a ‘Seed to Loaf’ road show which they take to schools in Exeter to help show pupils where there food comes from. This interactive workshop lets pupils use a hand powered stone mill using wheat plants and grain.

Low Sizergh Farm in Cumbria has developed an education programme, Growing Well, to help local school children learn about food and farming and healthy eating. When pupils visit the farm they are given the opportunity to sow seeds, pick vegetables and learn how the food they eat is grown, picked and reaches their plate.

The Think Food and Farming website provides details of training sessions for farmers about hosting farm visits.
