Dunnes Stores is losing ground in the Irish Republic to foreign retailers such as Tesco and Aldi, according to recently released figures from research agency TNS.

July figures show that Dunnes's share of the grocery market fell to 21.5 per cent from 22.2 per cent a year earlier. In the same period Tesco increased its market share to 24.6 per cent from 24.2 per cent. German discounters Aldi and Lidl also saw their share rise from 4.2 per cent to 5.4 per cent.

It has been reported that Dunnes has reshuffled its top management team in a bid to halt the slide. Noel Fox, the accountant and former auditor of Dunnes has been given a hands-on executive role in the day-to-day running of the company.

Meanwhile a source close to Aldi has claimed that the German retailer, which has 10 stores in the Irish Republic, has ambitions to open up to 140 stores across the country within a decade.
