Double berry introduction for Redeva

Double berry introduction for Redeva

Two new strawberry varieties have been launched by soft-fruit breeder Redeva, part of Redbridge Worldfresh, for this season.

The award-winning company has developed Red Glory and Red Princess for the UK climate.

Both lines are grown exclusively by The Summerfruit Company.

Red Glory and Red Princess are early-producing strawberry variants, which produce yields of a higher quality fruit in comparison to other industry available varieties, Redeva said. Expectations are high for Red Glory and Red Princess to deliver a flavoursome experience to the consumer and favourable yields to the growers.

Irene Geoghegan at Redeva said: “The varieties are day neutral so the season can stretch from May to October or November.

“They suit both UK growers, because of the extended season and high yields for growers, and UK consumers, because they get a sweet-tasting strawberry for a longer period.”

The two varieties offer a good shape and colour, according to consumer tests, and tasting trials have indicated that their flavour exceeds that of traditional industry varieties.

It is not yet known whether the varieties will be sold as part of the premium offer in UK retailers.

The new varieties follow the success of two strawberries developed for the Middle East - Red Delight and Red Merlin - launched last winter.
